Jessore district is located in the south-western part of Bangladesh and this district belongs to Khulna division.


Jessore district was established in 1781.

Former name of Jessore district was Khilafatabad.


There are various types of information about the naming of this district. According to many, the word Jashor is derived from the Arabic word Jasar.


The word Jessore means Sako, once the largest river in Jessore district. For this reason, Sako was built on the river or canal. Bir Khanjahan Ali Basher built Sako and crossed the river Bhairav ​​and came to Muruli in Jashar district.


Jessore district is believed to be derived from the word Sako or Jasar. According to another source, Maharaja Pratapaditya's father Vikramaditya, one of his associates Vasundharai Gaur, secretly crossed the area with a boat loaded with jewels of the Sultan's treasure. As a result, the state of Sammridra was replaced here.


The new kingdom was named Jessohar.


The present word Jessore is a modified form of the word Jessohar.


During the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971, Jessore District was under Sector No. 08 of 11 Sectors.


Jessore was the first enemy-free district of Bangladesh during the war of liberation.


The total area of ​​Jessore district is 2606.94 square kilometers.


To its east lies Narail and Khulna districts to the west, West Bengal of India, Jhenaidah and Magura districts to the north and Satkhira and Khulna districts to the south.
