Satkhira district is located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh and this district belongs to Khulna division.


In 1861 Satkhira subdivision was formed under Jessore district.


Later, when Khulna district was established in 1882, Satkhira subdivision was included in Khulna district.


Satkhira subdivision was upgraded to Purnang district in 1984 for administrative convenience.


Satgharia was the earlier name of Satkhira district. There are different types of information about the naming of this district. Kishtram Chakraborty, an employee of Raja Kishore Chandra of Nadia, purchased the Puran Purna region in 1772 during the Permanent Settlement. His son Pran Nath Chakraborty brought Satghar Kulin Brahmins and established it in the region. As a result of which this region was named Satghariya. He made great development of this region.

In 1861, Satgharia was adopted as the head office in the decision to establish the subdivision. Later the name Satgharia came to be known as Satkhira to the British.


During the independence war of Bangladesh in 1971, out of 11 sectors, Satkhira district was under sector 08 and 09.


The total area of ​​Satkhira district is 3858.33 square kilometers. Jessore district to the north, Bay of Bengal to the south, Khulna district to the east and West Bengal state of India to the west.


According to the 2011 census, the total population of Satkhira district is about 19 lakh 85 thousand.
