  • name it

There are various types of information about the naming of Patuakhali district. The name Patuakhali is believed to have been derived from the name "Patuar Khal" based on an old poem by Swargiya Devendranath Dutta. In the seventeenth century, the southern part of Bakla Chandra Dip was almost depopulated due to raids, looting, arson, abductions, and vandalism by Partuk pirates. At that time the city of Patuakhali was part of the Sundarbans and the locality was on the other side of the river. Portuguese pirates used to enter through canals called Kharani and plunder villages. As the Portuguese used to come through this canal, the locals created various myths and legends about this canal. Local people know this canal as Patuar canal. Later the name Patuakhali originated from Patuar canal. Besides, those who painted different types of pots or pictures in clay pots were called Patua.
