Jhalkathi district is located in southern part of Bangladesh and this district belongs to Barisal division.
In 1972, Jhalkathi Sub-Division was formed under Barisal Division.
In 1984 Jhalkathi Sub-Division was separated from Barisal District and converted into Purnang District for administrative convenience.

The history of the fishing community of this region is associated with the name of this district. During the post-medieval period fishermen settled in the areas along the Sandhya, Sugandha, Dhansindi, and Bishkhali rivers.
Lord of Maharajganj Shri Kailash Chandra established a ganj at this place.
Fishermen of this town used to sell fishing nets. Jhalkathi is believed to be derived from the word net stick. According to another source, the professional identity of the fishermen of this region was called Jhalo. Fishermen cleared the forest and settled here permanently. Thus the word jhalo from the fisherman and the word kati due to clearing the forest came into use.
From which the name Jhalakathi was later derived.
During the independence war of Bangladesh in 1971, Jhalkathi district was under Sector No. 09 out of 11 sectors.
